The Offer:

Well, this an unexpected promotion. I can’t recall a time in recent memory that American Express Canada had a transfer bonus to the Hilton Honors Program. On the afternoon of July 16, 2019, American Express sent emails out to their Membership Rewards cardholders, offering 50% more points when transferring to the Hilton Honors program. As lucrative as it may seem, it still is a bit of a niche to get spectacular value out of the transfer.

Value to be had:

Personally I rarely transfer to Hilton Honors as I find the value pales in comparison to the Marriott Bonvoy program, but there are always the few exceptions, this promo being one of them. Hilton Honors offers a 5th night free benefit to its elite members which could stretch the value of this promotion even further.

There are a few select properties where taking advantage of this offer could go a long way.

Take the Hilton Garden Inn Bali Ngurah Rai Airport in Indonesia for example. This is a 5,000 HHonor a night property. A week stay would cost you 30,000 HHonor points (including 5th night free benefit). If you were to take advantage of this promotion and transfer 20,000 Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors,  you would be able to extend your stay another week.

Another example would be the Hilton Petaling Jaya in Malaysia. This is a 10,000 HHonor a night property and you might be several thousand points shy from being able to fulfill a five night stay. Just transfer however many Membership Rewards points you are short, while factoring in the 50% bonus, to complete your redemption.

There are still many other properties with great value, feel free to navigate the Hilton Website to find out if any of these gems are in the vicinity of your future travels.

Another situation would be if you are still shy of points for an upcoming stay, potentially one of Hilton’s aspirational properties, this transfer might be able to help you top-off the redemption.

My thoughts:

Over the past year, many Canadians have made the leap into the US market for their lucrative bonuses. I’ve noticed that the American Express Hilton Honor family of cards are among the most popular to build US credit history. Perhaps this promotion might be enough for some of you to finally redeem those Hilton Honor points. The offer runs until August 31st, 2019 so you have some time to make your decision. Feel free to let me know in the comments below.

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? What property do you have in mind?

He took his first international solo flight to Europe at age 14 (pre 9/11). Applied for his first credit card at the age of 19 as he had heard of the miles & points game and couldn't wait to get started. Over a decade later, he has traveled to over 100 countries around the world and always seems to have another adventure plotted around the corner. His wife tries to accompany him whenever she can, but sometimes it’s a bit too hectic as he has a tendency to travel frequently, even if it's just for a brief weekend getaway.
