The WestJet World Elite Mastercard is consistently voted as Canada’s top airline credit card. While it doesn’t have much competition as Air Canada doesn’t have their own branded cards, they’re branded as Aeroplan cards, I would still vote this card as the top airline credit card in Canada even if we included the Aeroplan cards.

WestJet World Elite Mastercard Special Offer

The WestJet World Elite Mastercard has a lot going for it. First off, it has a 250 WestJet Dollars welcome bonus. Those can be applied towards the base fare of any WestJet booking. WestJet is essentially giving you a $250 WestJet gift card here so its value is exactly as it seems, $250 worth. If we subtract the annual fee of $119, this card gives you a minimum value of $131. However, this new offer comes with the first-year free, giving you the full $250 in value. This offer also includes WestJet Silver Elite status.

WestJet World Elite Mastercard Benefits

Even without this special offer, this card has a lot of benefits to it, like the famous WestJet Companion Voucher which allows you to pay a flat rate when 2 people are traveling on the same itinerary. As long as one person pays full price, the second person, or your “companion”, flies for a flat rate (plus taxes and fees) depending on where you’re going. Here is how the companion pricing breaks down:

  • $99 - Canada and the Continental USA

  • $299 - Hawaii, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

  • $399 - Europe

With flights across the country often being priced at $500+, this is a great perk to help keep costs low for those who have to fly during peak seasons.

Just by having this card you’re entitled to a free bag for you and up to 8 others that are traveling on the same reservation, as long as your WestJet Rewards ID is on the reservation at time of check-in. That means your whole family, and even a few grandparents or cousins traveling with you, get their first checked bag at no cost. There’s nothing better than free, right?

The WestJet World Elite Mastercard even has a really great earn rate:

  • 1.5% back in WestJet Dollars on everyday purchases

  • 2% back in WestJet Dollars on flight or packages booked with WestJet or WestJet Vacations

This gets even better too! With this special offer you have Silver status, which earns a bonus 1% on all WestJet flight and packages, so you get 3% back in WestJet Dollars.

Lastly, you might want to consider changing your gas station of choice to Petro-Canada. RBC and Petro-Canada has a partnership that allows you to save 3 cents per litre on gas and earn 20% more Petro-Points. To get this benefit, you must link your RBC and Petro-Canada accounts.

WestJet World Elite Mastercard Insurance

Insurance is one of those things that you hate buying but are glad you did when you need it. With the WestJet World Elite Mastercard, you get some very good insurance coverage including emergency medical, trip interruption, and auto rental collision/loss, all of which I have personally had to use at one time or another and was glad I booked my trip on a card with good insurance coverage. Here are the details:

  • Emergency Medical Insurance for the first 15 consecutive days of any out-of-province trips

  • Trip Interruption Insurance of up to $5,000 of coverage per person

  • Auto Rental Damage and Theft Insurance when you decline the car rental company’s insurance package

  • Hotel Burglary Insurance of up to $2,500 in total

  • Travel Accident Insurance of up to $500,000 in the event of accidental death or dismemberment

Overall, this card has a place in my wallet and if I didn’t already have this card, I would be applying for this card right away. No annual fee for the first year and free Silver status are just the cherries on top of an already great card with great benefits.
