Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Introduction

The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center is your classic all-inclusive mega-resort on a huge beachfront property in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In fact, the resort is so big that I will be splitting this review into 2 parts. This one will talk about the property and amenities itself and the second will be about the food, service, and activities. As much as I try to avoid all-inclusive hotels because I find that they don’t give you a very authentic experience of the place you’re in, they’re extremely convenient with kids as you never need to leave the resort.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Booking

That being said, we weren’t there on an all-inclusive package. I booked this stay for both my family and my parents using two Marriott Travel Packages that I had from before the devaluation. Since this was the equivalent of a points booking, we were not eligible for the all-inclusive package, but we did have the option to upgrade to it; however, the cost to upgrade was $90 USD per person per day, which is outrageous in my opinion. The kids would have been free, but for my wife, the boys, and I to consume $180 USD worth of food and drinks each day was very close to impossible, especially considering that you can walk down the street and get 4 tacos and a Corona for $5. Some people might be tempted by the all-inclusive upgrade, but I saw no value whatsoever in that offer. Convenience counts for something, but not at that price.

The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center is a Category 5 property in the Bonvoy program, which means it is 25,000 points per night. At The MasterMiles, we value Marriott points at 1 cent per point, which means a night here should cost you $250 or more to get good value for your points. During my stay, the going rate was $75 CAD/night so if it wasn't for my travel package, we would have paid cash.

Lastly, this hotel is bookable through all the major all-inclusive booking websites where your price will usually include flights, taxes, fees, and the all-inclusive package built into the price, which is an option if that’s your thing.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Location

The resort is located about 4 miles (~6.5km) from the Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR). To get to the hotel, I highly advise against using an airport taxi or resort shuttle if you’re looking to save money. There was a private shuttle that would have given us a ride to the hotel for free but we would have had to attend a random timeshare presentation at a hotel that wasn’t ours. We passed on that. If you leave the airport, immediately head left and walk over the pedestrian overpass to the other side of the highway, there will be a line of taxis waiting. Those are the local taxis and they will take you to the resort for 180-200 MXN ($12-13 CAD).

The hotel is right at the southern end of what I call “Resort Row”, where there are endless amounts of resorts lining the beach. If you head further south from the resort, you’ll enter the town with restaurants and shops. The Malecon, where all the action is for tourists is about a 20-minute walk south from the resort. I found this location to be the best I’ve had in Puerto Vallarta and a big positive for the resort.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Check-In

We arrived in our taxi and 2 bellmen helped us with our bags. They held onto them for us until we knew which room we were assigned, and then brought our bags up. Check-in was mostly a breeze, except that my parents had arrived before us and the check-in agent gave them our room and we got their room. There was no difference in the rooms themselves, but it really screwed things up for my elite status benefits. As a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite member, I receive free breakfast and access to the Sheraton Club, but due to the mismatched rooms and names, I had some difficulties receiving my benefits. I will talk a bit more about the Sheraton Club and the breakfast in the next review.

The rest of the check-in process was uneventful. We received our Wi-Fi codes, room keys, and a discount card for Bonvoy Elite members which entitled us to 10% off at the spa and all restaurants.

The resort’s VIP & Club Services Manager reached out before our arrival to ask about our room preferences and offered to help us with anything before or during our stay. During this back and forth exchange, I inquired about getting my benefits extended to my second room, but it was a firm “no”. She did, however, allow us to use the breakfast buffet at no additional charge, whereas the normal elite benefit is just a continental breakfast at the restaurant. This was very much appreciated as the breakfast spread was fantastic. The price for the breakfast buffet is usually $390 MXN (~$26 CAD) per person which isn’t bad, but we would never have paid that with all the great local options just down the street.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Room

The rooms looked like every other all-inclusive room I’ve stayed in before. As you walk in, you notice the big tile floors, a sink and mirror outside the bathroom with the toilet, and the shower inside the bathroom which was a great design in my opinion. A large king bed centered the room and across from the bed was a dresser and TV. There was a small table in the corner and a couch across from that. Our room did not have a balcony, but it had a railing on the inside that specifically asked us not to hang our clothes from. It was funny looking at the building from the pool as you could see almost every single room hanging clothes from that railing. I’m still not sure what the railing was for.

One issue we had with the room was ants. Or at least what looked like ants to us. Some sort of bug started appearing on the dresser under the TV. We alerted the front desk and they had someone spray the room while we were out. After that, we only ever saw one more ant, which I guess is a win? At this point, I went back to the resort manager and asked for my parents’ room to receive my benefits as compensation for the ants, but again, she did not budge.

At a resort like this, you spend such a little amount of time in your room that as long as it is clean and functional, there isn’t much to complain about.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Property

This property is massive. It has 13 floors, 461 rooms, and 12 suites. All-inclusive resorts are built so that you don’t have to leave them. They usually have multiple restaurants, several pools, and activities to keep you entertained all day long.

The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center has 2 very large pools. Both had a big section that was only about a foot deep with the remainder being about 4 feet deep. This was perfect for the boys to play in and not have us worry about them falling in over their head. Both pools had water that was warm and at the perfect temperature.

The main pool which was the centerpiece of the resort had a big rock display with seating around it. On one side of the rock was a volleyball net and on the other side was a swim up bar with seating for about 10 people.

After day one, we tried out the second pool and it’s where we ended up spending the remainder of our pool time. There were less people and a bigger shallow area for the boys to play in. The second pool also had waterfalls and they enjoyed floating and swimming under them. For the adults, there was a swim up bar with seating for about 6. Chairs at both pools were plentiful and there was no need to wake up at 6:00 AM to go down and put towels on a bunch of chairs so that you had them for the day. Make sure you wear your flip flops around the pool though, the ground gets smoking hot around midday.

The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center also features a beach area. The ocean spot had a rock wall about 25 feet offshore that broke the waves and created a great little “pool” area in the ocean to lay in. We spent an afternoon here, but headed back to the resort pools because the boys enjoyed that a lot more and it was safer for them to swim in the pool than in the ocean.

On the one afternoon we spent at the beach, we enjoyed our time and the service was fantastic. There were regular lounge chairs for guests to order food and drinks and an area for elite members with more comfortable chairs than your typical plastic loungers. These seats were wooden with plush cushions and had big umbrellas to provide shade. Cabanas were available for rent, but we didn’t feel that it was necessary as there were plenty of other loungers available that were just as comfortable. Beside the lounge chairs were a group of palm trees that held up hammocks. If you’re a beach lover, this area is definitely for you as it has plenty of lounging options to relax in with a drink in your hand.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Gym

The workout facility is something that is rarely graced with my presence at any hotel or resort that I step foot in. Regardless of that, I know that many of you enjoy your workouts while on vacation. There were plenty of treadmills, ellipticals, and exercise bikes for your cardio workouts and plenty of machines and free weights for weightlifting. There was also a space to use for yoga and mats to do a floor routine/workout. The water station was there to help quench your thirst during your workout anytime you needed it and if you got hungry, there was a fruit dish that was kept stocked with apples and oranges.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Spa

The Maiave spa was unlike any spa I’ve ever seen at a resort before. It had a full-on salon! Men and women were in there daily to get their hair and nails done and then heading to the other side of the spa for a massage. It looked beautiful from the outside, but you couldn’t go in without having a treatment booked. Based on the photos from the resort, it looked amazing!

The Maiave spa also had an outdoor space available for spa treatment if you wanted a change in scenery. Guests who opted for an outdoor treatment still have all of the access that those who opted for indoor treatments have, including all hydrotherapy pools and treatment options.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Bottom Line

There wasn’t a lot that I didn’t like about the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center (except the ants). I usually try to avoid all-inclusive resorts as I don’t find that they give you the most authentic local experience; however, they’re extremely convenient for families and those who want to relax and not have to worry about anything else. It is the perfect spot for those who have a week of vacation and they just want to be served and relax. The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center provided a fantastic experience for my family during our stay with a great location and tons of activities, food, and beverages that I’ll share with you in the next post.
